On their first album in over 20 years, Tanya Donelly and her band conjure the same potent mix of grace and force that fueled their 1990s output.

Just as Dove's songs adopt a comparatively traditional pop-rock bent, they're lyrically more cogent than Donelly's early world-salad compositions, with a focus on family and mature relationships.

It's a comfortable return for a band that didn't worry itself with fitting into a particular pop or rock moment back in the day, and still had enough in common to make meaningful, quality music. And that’s still true today.

Dove is a coherent collection that retains Belly’s essence while acknowledging the passing of nigh-on a quarter of a century.

It’s not breaking new ground or reinventing the wheel, but thank Belly for reviving a sound that maybe never should have disappeared in the first place.

Shaving a few of the middling cuts like “Heartstrings” and “Stars Align” would have helped the album overall, as Belly’s comeback songs runs together in a cranky sea of relationship angst.

This easily could have been a charming come back album with a handful of fun tunes. But realistically that's far from what we get, not even close. This album doesn't sound fresh or new, it sounds immediately dated. Half of this album doesn't even sound like it was written or recorded recently, it sounds like gussied up B-Sides and rarities from ages ago.
