While this album is not a classic, it is a very good rock album, and has only one main fault, that being that it is too long by a few tracks.

Sometimes great records result from marriages of convenience--like when three radical dudes find themselves short one frontman and recruit a Pacific Northwest pretty boy with a boss throat to howl over their chunk-style riffology.

By the end, it's clear that this pairing was a clever idea, but not an inspired one.

In their past lives, the members of this band were enraged. Now, fierce as they might sound, Audioslave just seem sorta engorged.

What does it all mean? What does this parade of heavyweights amount to? Refreshingly, the answer proves to be nothing very much at all.

Pitchfork
At its worst, this project is just plain retarded.

When this album is not approached as a super group album, but just listened to on the basis of being a rock album, it shines through as one of if not the best rock album of 2002 and that is no small feat at all.

The biggest problem here, is that two to four different groups of fans were coming to this album each with radically different expectations, its no wonder the band broke up from all the pressure associated.

Most supergroups fail to gain much of traction and find themselves to be in the shadows of their predecessors. In Audioslave's self-titled debut, we find a band that, yes, takes heavy influence from Rage and Soundgarden, but creates enjoyable early 2000's hard rock. Which is remarkable in its own right.

An album full of classic hard rock and alternative rock bangers. So many good songs, although, as much as I love them, they're better in their own groups (Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden), but this is their best album and its got some of the best early 2000s rock on it. It's definitely one of my favourite hard rock/alternative rock albums ever made, supergroup or not.

Pitchfork actually called this retarded lmao. Sure, over an hour of this can get exhausting and the instrumental work isn't anything spectacular but ultimately the record is about those incredible Chris Cornell vocals. So many hard/alt rock smashes on here that really take you back to the era. Like a Stone was a huge song in my teen years and I wish I'd seeked out the whole album back then.
