The Line of Best Fit

The richness of the source material and the deftness of interplay of each member of the band ensures that Your Queen is a Reptile leaves you with a sense of having been a part of something truly special.

Under The Radar
An immaculately conceived record, the latest from Sons of Kemet is proof that British jazz is alive and well and, even beyond that, may be one of the best cultural tools we have in fighting the oppressive and deeply troubling political landscape that appears to be forming in the west, of late.

The Independent

This album’s intricate, pressurised urgency keeps Sons of Kemet at that movement’s head.

AllMusic

Your Queen Is a Reptile is easily Sons of Kemet's most compelling outing. It offers inspired stylistic contrasts, canny improvisation, and killer charts. It's tight, furious, joyous, and inspirational.

musicOMH

A highly listenable album with an audibly beating heart, which deserves to be played so loudly that the neighbours complain.

The Needle Drop

Your Queen Is a Reptile should go down as one of the most exhilarating and revolutionary jazz records of 2018.

Exclaim!

Your Queen Is A Reptile is 55 minutes of ecstatic insurgency.

For Hutchings, jazz’s cultural memory is not just something to recite, but a rich language that informs an entirely new conversation.

Amazing

This is seriously the most exciting jazz album I've heard in my life, holy shit.

It's rich in instrumentals, melodies and style.
This is that Afro-Jazz shit, that slight African inspired sound.

I fucks with that. Africa is my home.

I find myself talking about this album way more than I realize. Whenever music in a conversation comes up this is always one of my recommendations. Sons of Kemet with their afro beats, intense melodies, intense political messages, and just.....the VIBE. It's left a bigger impact on me than even I realize.

Good jazz music nowadays is hard to come by, but thankfully we have been blessed here with this rhythmic and transfixing record. Each of the song titles of "Your Queen is a Reptile" depicts each woman who dealt with segregation. The musicianship here is stellar, dealing with rich sounds of afro-jazz and some Caribbean music that keeps the grooves consistent. My only cons with this record is that not all songs here are great. Tracks such as My Queen Is Ada Eastman and My Queen is ... read more
