Although there are some apparent improvements on Damn the Torpedoes, the breakout third album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the album still maintains a relatively close rootsy rock and roll sound to the preceding two albums. Production here improves, songwriting improves, and the instrumentation here is a great bit more punchy across the board. The quest for this album to be released was an epic battle with the giants of the recording industry, and the fact that it was one of Petty's best is something that the experience will never take away from him.

Great straight across the board. Petty doesn't get much better than this.
