It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water is much more than simply the album that preceded the Glow Pt. 2. It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water sees Phil leaning more towards a fusion of noise and folk, the sound he would later perfect on The Glow Pt. 2, than his debut did. Don’t Wake Me Up seemed to focus more on fusing rock and noise with some immense walls of noise with these distorted to hell guitars that would drown out Phil’s vocals at times, combined with somewhat nonsensical lyrics ... read more

This is where the "I'm not gonna review EVERYTHING" mindset comes into play. Phil Elverum has quite the expansive discography, so I skipped to where his musical output really mattered. The problem was that I didn't review "Don't Wake Me Up" because, while I found the record to be pretty solid, I just had very little to say. The rumors are true. There are indeed other Microphone albums outside of 'The Glow Pt.2'!

I know I'm not the first to say this is like a warm up, a prologue, ect to 'The Glow Pt.2'but its true! Hell, I'd say Phil's career. Some of his most iconic moments in Mount Eerie and The Microphones can be traced back to this album. This album is almost like his sketchbook. Some rough edges, but it really does feel like you're partaking in Phil's beautiful world.

Phil Elverum's first masterpiece , truly extraordinary. The more I listen to him the more I am starting to think he may be my favourite artist of all time (next to Kanye West of course).

This album is a further example of the one-of-a-kind sound Phil Elverum has given to music. A divine sound none of us knew we needed, but don't want to imagine a world without it.
