Metal Sucks

Prequelle absolutely lives up to the hype: the album is set to propel Ghost far beyond where anyone ever expected they’d be.

90
PopMatters
Underneath the catchy melodies and snazzy artwork, Forge and his band have created one of the cleverest heavy metal records in recent memory.
90
Metal Hammer

Prequelle is a dizzying, all-consuming rock opera delivered with convincing evangelical zeal.

80
AllMusic

On Prequelle, Ghost deliver fully on the promises of earlier records. Their strengths --including one for imitation -- are fully assembled and focused in an exercise of irresistible arena rock excess without sounding like a pastiche.

80
The Needle Drop

Prequelle may be slightly less edgy than Ghost's previous work, but is one of the band's most well written and produced batches of songs to date, and its loose concept keeps things just fresh enough.

75
Metal Injection

As a whole, Prequelle is ambitious; it is Ghost diving biretta-first into '80's-esque, radio-friendly anthems about the dark ages and the Bubonic Plague.

Exclaim!

Although Ghost still haven't captured the magic of their debut record, Prequelle is a great release that captures some of the eerie heaviness of their early material while keeping close to their classic rock meets '70s pop sound.

70
Northern Transmissions
Cinematic is the word, ‘Prequelle’ is the epitome of theatrical and grandiose, it’s scale is baffling and in some cases a bit silly, although it’s all good fun.
70
Rolling Stone
Regardless of their ambitions, Ghost will have to be content being hard rock's most interesting novelty, at least for the moment – a band with some degree of intellectualism in an arena that doesn't always go for that sort of thing.
61
Pitchfork

The unmasked Ghost’s revised approaches to dramaturgy and group dynamics don’t always sync on Prequelle, but when they do, the performance is nothing short of showstopping.

The world's most consistently average arena rock group Ghost is back again to deliver satanic metal for folks who aren't quite ready for the likes of Dissection. There's nothing impressive here, nor is there anything particularly bad—Prequelle is more of the same gimmick. This type of thing has been done better before, most notably by Mercyful Fate who took tired tropes of the 80's and caricatured them into b-movie pulp, yet even they couldn't stretch this concept past two albums.

I'm not sure what I was expecting with Prequelle but I'm pleased with what I got. It's uber-silly and over-dramatic almost to a fault, but the riffs and rhythms are extremely catchy. Obvious influces from metal and hard rock, but there's a lot of glam and hair metal, maybe even some disco. Tobias Forge sings as if he's commanding an unholy legion, fitting as he plays a dark Pope-esque character. He sings about the Black Plague, death and other Satanic things, but the overall edginess is ... read more

Sure. Prequelle is no where near as awesome as Meliora was. However, it's a wonderfully written Heavy Metal record that's unlike anything you'll hear this year.

Prequelle is by far Ghost's poppiest album to date, yet it still manages to be just as dark and enjoyable as their previous projects. The instrumental, while I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's as good as Meliora, are absolutely phenomenal. However, I would say that it's the writing that truly shines here. The lyrics are probably their darkest yet.
Overall, although I wouldn't say that this record is quite as good as their previous album, it's still a great record that is definitely worth ... read more

Ghost releases another album.

Prequelle is Ghost's fourth studio album, and I was personally introduced to them with Meliora, their 3rd, which I enjoyed quite a bit. I had heard loosely that some member of Ghost is not a part of the band anymore, but as someone who isn't up to date on the inner workings of this band, I can safely say I am judging this album based on nothing but the sound alone. And the sound isn't necessarily disappointing, but it isn't capturing me like I feel it ... read more
