Stylish and yearning, Love Yourself: Tear is BTS at a polished and focused peak, cohesive enough to feel like it was conceived in one particular period rather than cobbled together like some of their previous releases.
The latest album from the masters of the K-pop formula is a slick, loosely thematic album about love and loss, with a stronger emphasis on rapping than ever before.
Love Yourself: Tear shows off each individual member’s qualities fairly and acts as a well-structured introduction to a wider global audience that is all too eager to pick out negatives. Still, for longtime fans it will perhaps fail to resonate like their 2015-2016 singles.
Crossing the ocean hasn't altered BTS' DNA. The boys still genre-hop with panache.
The phenomenon of BTS seems more interesting than the music at its centre, although Love Yourself: Tear is certainly good enough to keep the phenomenon moving smoothly.
Though Tear has its consistency issues and its concept is sacrificed for the sake of having something for everybody, BTS is making ambitious and passionately performed pop music that puts many of their Western contemporaries to shame.
Exact recreation of what went down while writing this album:
Label Exec: "Yo BTS we have written 4 really good songs for you guys to use on your next release."
BTS: "That’s cool and all, but what about the other tracks? Isn’t our next project supposed to be an album?"
Exec: "Are you sure? How long are your albums anyway?"
BTS: "Well… Our EPs range from 7-9 songs so at least 11 on an LP?"
Exec: "11? Shit… Don’t ... read more

"Tear" takes what I liked about "Her" and really bumps the quality up quite a bit. This whole album is pretty much just 45-ish minutes of nothing but pure fun for its whole runtime! Each of the guys on here have some pretty nice chemistry on most of these songs (even if it is a bit hard for me to discern them from each other, but still). Production on most of these songs as well is pretty good too, its poppy in just the ... read more
Just here to give these boys some love. They're changing the way the mainstream, American music industry sees international music.
BTS at their best. Whoever decided to let V start the album with Singularity deserves a raise and several bonuses because that song slaps. Just like with Stigma, he shines even brighter on his own. That voice...whew chile! And 134340 might be in my top 5 BTS songs if all time. Airplane pt. 2 is a total bop and the emotionally charged Outro: Tear had me bucking in my seat.
No skips whatsoever. Great album.
