It's clear that Utada's voice has matured beautifully and allowed her to take on a wider range of genres and song compositions. On 'Hatsukoi' Utada extends the sound palette of 'Fantome' and we can hear her voice against grandiose string sections, pianos and minimalist beats. However as an emotional experience this album doesn't quite hit like the last. Utada Hikaru is a singer I'm still curious to see more of. Not only for being the most popular J-Pop singer of the site, but also for... Well... Being talented. "Hatsukoi" is a great album for those who are unfamiliar with foreign vocals (maybe if your native language is english and never gave yourself the pleasure of speaking another language outside mexican restaurants), and it's definitely a fan favorite.
