Lake Street Dive is arguably one of the best soul bands of this decade, releasing three good-to-excellent albums that inhabited old music and made it exciting and fresh. On “Free Yourself Up,” all of their key ingredients are there, but something is off. These songs see Lake Street Dive at their least spirited, certainly not pushing themselves nearly as hard as on “Bad Self Portraits” (still their best album).
