Underwood's deliberate maturation doesn't come at the expense of what she's done before. Instead, it deepens and enrichens what was already there-as any good maturation would-and the result is an album as satisfying as it is surprising.
It’s not surprising that sixth album Cry Pretty ... contains significant emotional depth; the title track is her own rallying cry to get through this exceptionally trying year.
Carrie Underwood has taken some modest political risks without changing her full-throated style. She knows what she’s good at, and Cry Pretty is full of the kind of songs that made her one of the most popular artists in the world.
The singer’s big-box country tackles gun violence and addiction alongside heartbreak and early-AM booty calls.
On her new album Cry Pretty, Carrie Underwood belts out rafters-reaching country anthems, incorporates dance and hip-hop beats into her radio-ready twang-pop and even dips her toe into politically charged waters on a couple of songs.
Carrie Underwood mostly sticks to her comfort zone on Cry Pretty, but she steps ever so lightly outside it in an uneven album.
The album is frustrating, with no middle ground, and the strengths don't quite make up for the weaknesses.
Take 75% uplift, add 20% melancholy, top up with 5% not actually contentious controversy, and voilà: Cry Pretty.
‘Cry Pretty’ shines in its most raw moments and it slips when it fears it will alienate part of her demographic.
Carrie Underwear releases Cry Pretty. I will not cry pretty today.

5. Southbound- Meh (It's fine I guess)
6. That Song That We Used To Make Love To- Good (What was that noise in the beginning)
7. Drinking Alone- Great (Catchy)
8. The Bullet- Great (This is ... read more
