I have a history with this song. It was one of those songs that saw near constant radio rotation when I was growing up. When you're a little kid, you don't have much of an ability to distinguish quality. On the cusp of teenhood, I learned the meaning of the lyrics and their relevance to Billie Joe Armstrong's life. One of my favorite Green Day Songs, Billie's emotions are shaking and sound like he is on the verge of crying. It's a song about Billie's dead father that passed away when he was just 10 years old. Apparently during the funeral Billie ran away to go back to his room. When his mother knocked on the door Billie screamed back wake me up when September ends. This is such a beautiful song with so much emotion packed into it. To be honest, when I first heard this, I thought this was just another sad song, but when you listen to it, it's so much more than that. Yes, it is sad, but it really does feel like a son singing about his dead father (which it is by the way).
