My Childhood Trauma is Spotify playing Year of the Monkey in the middle of the night.
The first 2 tracks on this album are the greatest pleb filter in all of recorded music history. Becasue the tracks that follow it are some of the most beautiful the man ever composed in his entire career.
Before Sufjan Stevens had is indie folk sound he is known for, he started off with medieval inspired music, then the drastically different electronic/ glitch music on Enjoy Your Rabbit. If you only like Sufjan for albums like Illinois, then this may be a turn off, but if you ignore the fact that this is the same artist who later wrote those albums, there is a lot to enjoy here. I used to think of this in the same vein as A Sun Came for Sufjan: a throwaway early project before he found his sound. After a recent relisten though, I really admire how much he committed to electronic on Enjoy Your Rabbit. It’s by no means a masterpiece, and I do think the 75 minute runtime on this one is self-indulgent even for Sufjan Stevens, but overall the project goes over way better in practice than on paper.
