Before Bill Callahan became the somber-toned wordsmith we know today, he spent his 20s making lo-fi indie singing like the precursor to Conor Oberst. Musically, this is about as diverse and lively as anything in catalog, but the writing isn't consistent as we've come to expect from him. A lot of the songs are almost snippets, just a single verse extended into about two minutes, but the more fleshed out tracks can be real treats.
