Northern Transmissions

Through amazing grooves and some of the best percussion in the dance world, Soulwax bring the club experience home.

The album is ... immensely enjoyable and generously rewards repeat listens.

Essential isn't as essential as its title suggests, but don't let that stop you from seeking it out. It has more of the loveable chaos that once made Soulwax among the most important acts in electronic music. This time it's more controlled.

Loud and Quiet

There’s enough to dip, cherry-pick and still turn up some serious dancefloor fodder but, as a complete collection, it’s literally Soulwax by numbers.

Exclaim!

Essential is a strange, adventurous and ultimately enjoyable collection of half-finished, fully realized songs that could only have been crafted by artists as musically brazen and tenured as Soulwax.

I found this album to be a painfully boring listen with the exception of Essential Eleven.

ESSENTIAL trades the memorable live execution of FROM DEEWEE for a more conventional club vibe; there's a lot more going on here and the album does have a lot going for it - it's just missing the urgency of its predecessor to make it equally as unforgettable.

Soulwax's 'Essential' is a diverse, beat-driven trip. The albums stripped-back approach is an ode to its title, with minimalistic beats leading the way. The end result is an album that traverses a plethora of different styles, sometimes borrowing from African beats to deep European house, with a lot more in between.

A throwback to the mid to late 00s when the internet was saturated with these somewhat generic sounding electro club artists. Soulwax was one of the more notable one of these artists, specifically for some of their fantastic remixes of other songs. Although the 'essential' concept isn't worthy of a full hour it delivers playfully entertaining material for a good portion of it.
