Raw Silk Uncut Wood ... is a departure from those experimental pop leanings and a call back to abstract compositions for labels like NNA Tapes and RVNG Intl.

NME

There’s no vocal on the record: having defined her trademark sound on ‘Dust’, Halo has set out to confound one more – perhaps indicating that her music’s as playful as her persona after all.

Pitchfork

If Dust was a series of cubist portraits, fragmenting the human into new and startling shapes, then Raw Silk is a collection of unpopulated landscapes, pristine and placid in their emptiness.

The 405

Halo has tried her hand at just about everything and while Raw Silk Uncut Wood may alienate some in its distinctness from her back catalogue it finds a firm place in her ever-growing oeuvre.

The mini-album is a beautiful practice of minimalism that also maintains her intricate perspective.

Laurel Halo's 'Raw Silk Uncut Wood' screeches and scratches its way along, etching itself in the listener's mind. It is haunting, brooding and chaotic all in one and sounds as if it belongs in a film score. Considering that it clocks in at 32 minutes across only 6 tracks, Halo takes us on a journey from start to finish, bending ambient and electronic conventions to the point that they might snap.

From soothing ambient pieces to off kilter jazz-electronics, Raw Silk Uncut Wood doesn't act as a new step for Laurel as much as further reinforcement of the many ideas presented on Dust, though this is far more conventional and fathomable.

( ☆☆☆½ ) great/decent album

This is likely the most haunting yet reflective electronic album to be released this year; taking you down a short, chaotic path of sound and emotion. I waited a long time to listen to this one, but I'm glad I circled my way back and found it.
