Idc what anybody says, this is way better than the debut. Eases back on the Balkan sound and Zach hones his singing in a bit to be more palatable. Every song on here is supposed to represent a different city in France. I guess if I was from the desert, I'd be obsessed with far away places too.
“Gulag Orkestrar” easily could have made Beirut a one-album wonder, but Zach Condon keeps his momentum alive with “The Flying Club Cup,” which does a lot of the things you’d hope for in a sophomore album following a buzzy debut. Whereas the intense Eastern European connotations were key to the continued appeal of “Gulag Orkestrar,” Condon demonstrates here that his songs don’t need to rely so heavily on setting to remain strong.
