The Independent

Church has always fit with the classic image of the underdog, but Desperate Man has a grit that didn’t resonate so much on his previous albums.


Instead of going big, the way he did on 2014's burly Outsiders, he's keeping things small, a decision that highlights the many savvy ways he expands American musical traditions even as he adheres to them.


Desperate Man is good, but its sentimentality is cruder than his best work and lacks the sexual charisma that redeemed the last album. Church is usually more thoughtful than what he presents here.

So much influence shows on this album. Love each track even though some had to take more than one listen and I had to stop focusing on meaning and just listen.
Pretty disappointed in this one to be honest. I really dug the lead single of this thing. "Desperate Man" was soulful and bluesy and awesome but the rest of the album is loaded with cheap country cliches. I was a big fan of Church's past three albums and really his whole career. This album, however, seems to be his least focused and least interesting.
