(Original) This is a hidden gem. The production it's amzaing, the group it's loud and energetic and the atmosphere it's fun and colorful. The lyrics are the only thing that it's less exciting, they're just OK. Maybe next time I'll found out that they actually suck but so far that's my perspective for this one.
Brit-pop goes psychedelic with a folk crown in the head: it resides in the basement of an old pub, a bit messy, a bit drunk, away from the glossy headlines and, togethet with friends and sinners, comes up with some really infective tunes.
As far as debut releases go, The Coral's self-titled issue makes for a very good glimpse into their style of Brit Pop-rock and Neo-Psychedelia. And, while it's a bit sophomoric, the sporadic placement of some of these goofier tunes [Skeleton Key] leaves me searching for the off switch. Simply, these cats have grown considerably and while this CD is certainly not essential, it does have its favorable elements. My suggestion: Start with the CD, "Singles Collection."
