Tiny Mix Tapes

The self-mythologizing that Ka composes on Orpheus vs the Sirens constitutes a minoritarian epic that resounds with the properly poetic catharsis that might purge the constraints from a life’s definition.

In a twist, the Brownsville rapper projects the streetwise narratives of his youth through the lens of Greek mythology—an audacious move, but his hypnotic voice and evocative writing pull it off.

The Needle Drop

With its well executed concept, tight sequencing, and top-notch production from Animoss, Orpheus vs. the Sirens is probably the best album with which to introduce someone to the work of Ka.

Ka's music will be a tough sell for hip-hop fans accustomed to baroque maximalism. Orpheus vs. the Sirens is almost confrontationally intimate; long stretches pass without any percussion at all.

Doom influence beside, the album is unbelievably creative and is nonstop genius. Production is gorgeous. It doesn’t drag.
Wow...this is amazing lyricism with fitting production and an interesting concept...

This feels conjured from the realm of DOOM, the combination of lifes despair hung on some ancient theme, rappers have long told myths, lies of grandeur so its fitting that etching mythology with hood politics works so well here.

As expected, each track is a maze of verses, covered heavy in haze, each turn and listen unlocks new lines that grow the world built here so too wherever dead-end lines appear there are ... read more
Hot diggity damn this album cemented Ka as being one of the best mc's. The whole greek mythology concept to this album is a nice touch.

Edit: Grew on me, 85-90.
