Tiny Mix Tapes

The self-mythologizing that Ka composes on Orpheus vs the Sirens constitutes a minoritarian epic that resounds with the properly poetic catharsis that might purge the constraints from a life’s definition.

Pitchfork

In a twist, the Brownsville rapper projects the streetwise narratives of his youth through the lens of Greek mythology—an audacious move, but his hypnotic voice and evocative writing pull it off.

The Needle Drop

With its well executed concept, tight sequencing, and top-notch production from Animoss, Orpheus vs. the Sirens is probably the best album with which to introduce someone to the work of Ka.

Exclaim!

Ka's music will be a tough sell for hip-hop fans accustomed to baroque maximalism. Orpheus vs. the Sirens is almost confrontationally intimate; long stretches pass without any percussion at all.

Living off borrowed time the clock ticks faster

Doom influence beside, the album is unbelievably creative and is nonstop genius. Production is gorgeous. It doesn’t drag.

Edit: I have hidden my true feelings on this album for the majority of the year. This is in fact my true AOTY and not the Idles record. This album was just soo unbelievably gorgeous on all fronts with Ka masterminding the whole thing. This album is so perfect for me personally becsuse it combines two of my favorite things in Lyrical Hip Hop and Greek Mythology. The vocal cuts are all perfectly executed and the beats and production are so clean and shiny. I feel like I'm actuslly in the middle ... read more

A solid album from a new artist on the scene, well, another already existing artist under another alias that is. I walked into this not knowing anything, but as soon as he started rapping, I could identify it was Ka, whether or not knowing it was him or someone else. I have only heard 'The Night's Gambit' before this, but I loved it, I will probably review his discography some time when I get to it, but because his new moniker only has one release under it's name at the moment, I could just ... read more

Again, hip-hops underground spews out another brilliant piece of storytelling. As expected, each track is a maze of verses, covered heavy in haze, each turn and listen unlocks new lines that grow the world built here so too wherever dead-end lines appear there are ... read more

Hot diggity damn this album cemented Ka as being one of the best mc's. The whole greek mythology concept to this album is a nice touch.

Edit: Grew on me, 85-90.
