As St. Louis tackles folk-country in ways it hasn’t seen in some time, she brings out a mystical quality usually reserved for her rock contemporaries.

The record starts to lose a little momentum near the end, and some parts of the record float by without registering much of an impression, but the highlights usually make up for this.

Additional thoughts:
Cannot stop listening to this, perfect 'fall' album. Some really great SONGWRITING. Yes!

Original thoughts:
Another solid release from Woodsist, although this is really from Kevin Morby's Mare offshoot. Produced by Kyle Thomas (King Tuff) and Morby...

Country/folk sound, lazy day vibes. Great vocals from Anna St. Louis with just enough arrangement variety to keep things interesting. So much potential, great debut.
sounds like the best of kevin morby
“If Only There Was A River” sounds like what you’d expect from its cover — and I mean that as a compliment. Anna executes these songs in a very modest and unflinching way and I think this is a great album to relax to given that it ... read more
great songs and a beautiful voice. it was funny reading the critics trying to suggest voice comparisons and they came up with some truly goofy ones like Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton. St. Louis is hard to place in the traditional chamber folk pantheon as she has a vocal range below Linda Perhacs and Sandy Denny. My take is that she is Kathy Heideman with Hope Sandoval's phrasing. that gets you the sultry with the sass.
