Brighton, U.K. trio Our Girl’s debut album Stranger Today is the perfect gift for the listener that loves a good musical dichotomy. Fronted by The Big Moon’s Soph Nathan, the band exudes the sweet and tender meets heavy and formidable sound of groups like the Pixies and My Bloody Valentine with their cathartic, thoughtful pop/rock and distorted shoegaze and grunge.
Stanger Today is the sound of a band doing what they want, knowing how to do it and, most importantly, having a blast doing it.
I'm pleasantly surprised at how strong and impactful this album is. Guitar rock is such a crowded genre and one I find myself engaging with less and less, but this really stands out from the noise, so to speak. Sophie's voice is excellent.
Best tracks: I Really Like It, Level, I Wish It Was Sunday
Pretty solid, standard indie rock that doesn't break from the mold so much as refines it and puts out a debut that proves the group knows the genre well and knows how to make engaging and heartfelt music within the confines of the sound. I hope to see more from this group that tries to push the boundaries a little further as you can tell that the capabilities are absolutely there.
