What better way to follow up a review of a super big pop record then to talk about a niche ass experimental prog-metal record? Christ, no wonder i'm single...

This album is super goddamn creative, and kinda batshit. It's calming, furious, atmospheric, gentle, harsh, aggressive, catchy, and...by god this album is nearly all of the tricks in the book! It's a strange album to talk about, because there is so much to talk about, from the mixing of different theatrical genres (electronic, death ... read more

Everything was happening at once and it was a trip, but I thoroughly liked it.

Empath seems to be quite the divisive listen for the AOTY user base. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with this truly unique record. It's gargantuan in scope, maximalist in construction and quite possibly the most 'extra' album I've ever heard. To put that in perspective; I have ADHD and even I was like "alright mate, chill out for a second".

Edit: I still think this project is kinda awesome, I just have no incentive to return to it.

(first of all, thanks to PipePanic for the recommendation!)
Okay... I'm not gonna lie here. This album is an absolute larger than life experience. This album sounds like it was perfected to the very smallest detail, especially due to how high-budget this thing sounds. It mixes this death-metal like sound with some of the grandest instrumentals and vocals you'll hear this year. It's kind of like a rock ... read more

"Empath" is metal/rock opera, which despite having lots of super bold ideas, didn't really translate to the music as intended; leaving poorly mixed songs, a lack of dynamics, an occasional laughable corny vocal performance and pretty weak direction. For every great moment, there is an equally tedious moment leaving this to be an incredibly mixed bag of a release.

some difficult to explain. This album is gold, pure gold. Is a great and fucking weird concept beyond all music this presents. The number of genres is ridiculous since electronic pop to reggae and the concept of samples from hip hop. This fucking album is not afraid to express, this kind of magic the ridiculous magic, the laugh of himself to the grade of perfection I have only seen in Ween or Father John Misty. Just like Ween making metal, something like that. The composition reminds me a lot ... read more

Never heard anything like that. I'm impressed. It's like Between The Buried and Me mixed with Disney. I loved it LOL.

REALLY GOOD

So this is a cool prog album and all, but I wouldn't call it Devin Townsend's best by any means. It's not like I'm an aficionado when it comes to his music or anything, but I do enjoy quite a bit of his discography, and I'd rather listen to those albums over Empath. The mixing also kinda bogs this one down for me. I still enjoyed it, though, and wouldn't skip over it during a deep dive into his catalog.

i can't believe i listened to over an hour of this garbage, but i did. Empath is what happens when budgets and egos are unmanageably high, when someone wants to be >out there< but seemingly has no idea how to do it in a way that's even slightly palatable.

every song is underwritten and overproduced, layered under a borderline incomprehensible wall of noise that has no compositional cohesion. elements are thrown in almost every bar (at least that's what it feels like), and everything is ... read more

I have listened to this record twice.
The amount of little details going on in the background really help add to the album.
Also, I bit the inside of my mouth because I was jamming to Hear Me too hard.
What an experience that it was.

Just too chaotic and somehow simultaneously happy which for me makes it not very enjoyable as a metal record. Sometimes it's like epic and that's cool

BEST: Singularity

WORST: Hear me

This is something different, I really like that there are several music genres connected here and it's nice mixed up but I do not know if I will return to this album, I would rather listen to it in the evenings or at night to appreciate this music more than during the day where I need something else. Where the fuck my donate gone? Im unhappy:(

Empath is a hodgepodge of ideas that rarely play together effectively.

His best album? Only time will tell, but the guy's one of the most (if not THE most) diverse and innovative (and best) musicians out there, and I'm really puzzled by all the mediocre ratings by users... 71? Maybe 81, but that's still too low for this monster of an album. Now, SYL's City, Ocean Machine's Biomech and the first 2 DTP albums are all excellent, so I already have a hard time naming a single best Devin Townsend album, now it's 5 masterpieces by this legend! And it doesn't look like ... read more

Very eclectic, very exciting but at the same time very long to an unnecessary point. Enjoyable to the least but never felt like going back to it ever since it came out.

This is a rare perfect album for me. Townsend’s mastercraft beauty comes from the natural strangeness pressed through the listeners ear. Empath provides a kaleidoscope of sounds, emphasizing the pep that is found within the unknown. The organic presence of his absurdity is very Zapponian. It's not for every one, and perhaps it's not for anyone other than Townsend, himself, but the result comes out as fairly stunning.

This album is very conflicting. The individual songs are emaculately produced, the vocals are larger than life, the instrumental is crisp, clean, pristine, and the scope of the album is like the Sweet Victory scene from Spongebob. However, as an album experience, I feel this album is severely lacking. It's over an hour long, I feel it's to long for this kind of music, it would be much more enjoyable at 45 minutes. I will say this, I see this growing on me, just like To Be Kind or Pure Comedy. ... read more

Breathtaking album, so orchestral, beautiful, heartfelt, and uplifting, yet at the same time heavy, complex and so experimental. Yet another brilliant album by Townsend. The man is lyrically and musically a genius. Fucking amazing album and album of the year for me so far. Tremendous effort once again. AOTY as of right now.
