Tobias Sammet’s metal opera project Avantasia was set to go back into hibernation after the phenomenal Ghostlights. While this news was disappointing to many, it seemed like a good call, considering that any quick follow-up would likely have been a step down from the lofty heights of the 2016 record. I will always love the grandiose vibe of opera metal, especially when it is executed as well as it is here. The cover of “Maniac” feels kind of out of place on the album even though is is also performed well.
