The Guardian

Cherry’s sage perspective weaves through these tender, bristling tracks, and elevates Broken Politics from being simply a beautiful record to a revelatory one.

Broken Politics is an expansive and heartfelt collection of songs — a communication from within one of the most singular artists working today, articulating the nuances of where politics start for many: in one's day-to-day existence.

A slow burn of an album, ‘Broken Politics’ artfully cuts through a turbulent, noisy world.

Cherry's songs here are deeply meditative, often implying or directly expressing sorrow regarding planetary afflictions rooted in fear.

Anyone looking for party bangers may be disappointed ... but Broken Politics is the sound of an artist growing and maturing very nicely.

One of the most remarkable things about Broken Politics is its balance – between reflection and retaining the listener’s attention, between the personal and the political, and between Neneh and the album’s producer.

The 405

Here, Neneh Cherry continues to blur boundaries between genres with ease, pulling various styles into a single space creating something of a communal experience. Which is appropriate given how increasing dysfunctional our world is feeling as a whole.

Rolling Stone

As social media crack-hits amp us all up to the breaking point, these downtempo warrior cries feel both radical and sustaining.

It is a more even-paced, leaner affair with Hebden showing his ability to create subtly shaded melodic gems that allow Cherry's voice and lyrics to shine. In turn, Cherry turns out vocal hook lines emboldened by the intricate music behind her.

Amid our tumultuous news cycles, the unevenness of Broken Politics is the best she can do, and it’s enough.

The Skinny

Neneh Cherry's fifth studio album, Broken Politics may not always seem like an urgent inquisition into our times, but it may encourage a sense of reflection.

In many ways, this album is a diary entry, a fascinating insight into the inner-workings of a true one-off.

Crack Magazine

Broken Politics doesn’t claim to hold the answers to repairing the fractures of the world, but Neneh Cherry nails the strange sensation of searching around for them anyway.

The Observer
There are fractured beats, and tendril-like melodies, but here nothing really lands – as either protest or revelation.
A soulful expedition, it is both minimalist while at the same time meditative in which the listener is not taken out of their comfort zone so that the lyrics and heart can be felt through the music. Others have taken this route before and have done so better, but there is still an undeniable air of experience across this record that can only be accomplished by an artist who has been making music for decades now and has nothing to prove at this point other than to show that life experience ... read more
Four Tet
I mean, Neneh is just so damn talented that she can’t really make anything completely awful. Here, she teams up with Four Tet to make one of her most dreary, Downtempo albums to date. And sometimes, that’s done to a fault. There are more than a few tracks here which I wish there was a little more than just this very chilly, minimal beat and nothing more. Neneh’s angry, politically charged lyrics are almost always enough to keep me awake. But in the moments where Four Tet ... read more
Neneh Cherry
Broken Politics
Undeniably her best. I guess Four Tet also did the last one, but I couldn't tell; this time around its much closer to what you expect Four Tet production to sound like & it compliments her much better.
