Though, at the roots, Saor is a black metal band, Marshall seemingly effortlessly shakes off the shackles of genre guidelines, allowing Forgotten Paths to channel a variety of influences into a sound that is as atmospheric, hauntingly beautiful and emotional as it is heavy, dark and abrasive.
Largely, Forgotten Paths is a shorter listen than the albums that predate it. It’s not a bad thing, but there’s definitely some level of want for yet another colossal track. Listeners don’t want new or revolutionary as long as Marshall maintains this artsy, well-executed foray into mind-boggling greatness.
One of the first atmospheric black metal albums I had the pleasure of listening to, which is why I was so hyped for their album that released earlier this year.
The atmosphere is perfect, I feel like I'm walking in a forest in late winter/early spring. The pagan influences are done really well.
Saor is an atmospheric black metal band that uses some folks elements within their songs. The piano was beautiful and so was the usuage of an acoustic guitar. Saor also brings a lot of melody within their music. It's not at all raw and has a clean production which really helps with the atmosphere of Forgotten Past. More solid atmospheric black metal. I loved the piano and the more folky instrumentation on here but it's a little short. The perfect length for an atmospheric black metal album for me is between 50 and 70 minutes so the album has the chance to completely engulf you in the atmosphere.
