CRITIC REVIEWS

It’s universally accessible, and it’s the kind of pop that has the potential to dominate the charts and win over hearts during festival slots.

Exclaim!

At the risk of sounding completely absurd, U.K. crooner Sam Smith is the musical equivalent of Neapolitan ice cream. Each slab of his debut album, In the Lonely Hour, reveals another layer through which he lays bare his emotional pangs.

70
AllMusic

This is an understated and promising first step from an unpredictable and distinctive talent.

70
PopMatters
Regardless of the setting, his voice is a revelation to behold. Where Smith will follow his muse next is anyone’s guess, but for now, his talent is a clear force to be reckoned with and his debut is ripe with promise.
70
Slant Magazine
There are enough moments of genuine musical, lyrical, and vocal virtuosity and soul to crack even the most hardened listener's icy heart.
67
A.V. Club
Smith’s voice remains rich, but the songs and their sentiments are one-dimensional. As singles, the LP works. But as a whole product, listeners could start wondering if they hit “repeat” by accident.
60
DIY
He’s not gonna lose that ‘male Adele’ tag any time soon, but one can only hope that by the follow-up he’s found someone to love him right back.
60
Time Out London

If it were longer, it might drag, but thanks to a tight half-hour running time, this album is the perfect soundtrack to your next wallow.

55
Pitchfork

Most of In the Lonely Hour is enjoyable just for Smith's voice alone ... But so much of the album remains hard to swallow otherwise, lost underneath layers of industry polish and focus-grouped lyrics.

50
The Line of Best Fit

It might be the sheer prettiness of his voice that limits its appeal. It’s doesn’t possess the visceral quality required to prickles the neck hairs, and it’s never arresting enough to transport the listener.

40
FACT Magazine

In The Lonely Hour is an album made by an artist who spent years waiting to be famous, but when he got there, found that he didn’t actually have that much to say.

40
NOW Magazine
Its formulaic songwriting and middling, lite-pop arrangements seem more concerned with top 40 appeal than with maximizing the richness and openness of his voice.

Soulful pop for the ignorant and souless pop for the initiated.

Should U Get It?: Heaven Yes!!!
My Comment: One Thing to say! FUCK CRITICS! I mean every album has a point & the point of this one was to be emotional! Why people can't understand that?

Really bland and shallow. There isn't anything here to tie these songs together and everything outside of the singles are just unmemorable dull with pretty much nothing going on.

Best Track: Stay With Me
Worst Track: Money On My Mind
