CRITIC REVIEWS

The Line of Best Fit

The production is meticulous, and though each track is seemingly light on variation, once you really dial in (or put your headphones on) Awake is a subtle panoply of rhythms and musical ideas.

73
Paste

Awake, though, doesn’t feel like much of an evolution for Hansen or his music.

70
Sputnikmusic

More than ever before, these songs spin on their own axes: and that fact alone makes this record as positive a step forward for Tycho as anything.

70
musicOMH

Awake is in many ways a perfect record, but if the listener isn’t prepared for a full-on ecstatic assault, it’s hard to see them making it beyond the first track.

70
Drowned in Sound

Rather than being populated by long moments of relaxation, the way old Tycho tracks used to sit back invitingly, Awake pokes and prods at your ears with a sudden change in pace or the introduction of a new motif.

70
Exclaim!

Although Tycho and company seemingly recycle a few ideas on Awake, it's a rewarding, mood-inducing listen that's best digested whole.

70
AllMusic

Even as Tycho adds more depth and variety to his sound, his music's main success is giving listeners an attractive backdrop for whatever they might be doing.

70
Pitchfork

It's still recognizable as a Tycho recording, with a familiar sense of melancholy and the embers of sundown burning through it, but with the ambition clearly heightened right from the first few notes.

67
Consequence of Sound

Awake is a compelling gallery of electronic minimalism whose emotional depth requires a rich listen and zero passes.

60
NME

That's not to say this eight-track instrumental isn't pleasant, it's just a bit like going for a drive around a ring road: You'll be comfy, you might spot some pretty things on the hard shoulder, but ultimately it doesn't get you anywhere.

60
DIY

The record surprises far more frequently than his previous material, despite never straying too far from his initial sound.

60
The Needle Drop
Tycho makes the transition from hazy bedroom producer to what almost sounds like a full instrumental rock band on this latest record of his.
55
The 405

There are times during Awake that could be forgiven for thinking that you're listening to the backing track of an on-screen TV guide, or some sync for a instructional video on how to get the best out of the latest Adobe software.

50
No Ripcord

Awake is completely aware of what it wants to accomplish, but it also comes across as stunted and unvarying in emphasis.

40
PopMatters

Over the eight songs here Hansen struggles to be engaging leaving an album that is pretty, stream-lined, and much too often dull.

The music doesn’t sound like trash but it’s just not good. It was hard to pay attention when listening to this album because it didn’t keep me interested.

Maybe this album just hit me at the right-place-right-time, but all of the musical ideas that others deem its weakness are in fact this record's strength.

Adjectives: carefully-crafted, light, timeless, subtle, while also colorful, sharp, ecstatic, and perfectly beautiful.
