Tom Walker’s debut is a perfect representation of him – cheerful, genuine, heartfelt and talented, and as the final notes of his much-awaited record grace your ears, it definitely seems like it’s a great time to be alive.

Perhaps it wouldn’t seem like such a guaranteed success if it felt in some way risky or adventurous. As it is, the sense that absolutely nothing here has been left to chance – and that What a Time to Be Alive might have been a more interesting album if it had – is a tough one to avoid.

Walker drizzles bluesy, Hozier-like soul bombast and nebulous folk tunes with Bond strings and EDM sizzles; tracks so thin and flavourless they go down without chewing.
Somewhere in a scottish studio, a controversial figure attempts to combine the sonic genes of Hozier with those of Rag'n'Bone Man and, all of a sudden, I had an intense premonition that I should run as fast as I could.
Some of the songs on here are bland, but others like The Show actually show that he has a lot of potential.
It's an alright album, one of your older relatives will probably love it but it's not gonna blow your socks off.
This man won the British Breakthrough Act at this year's BRIT Awards over the likes of IDLES and Jorja Smith, no seriously.
