The Needle Drop

Poppy and her collaborators have gotten a lot better at working her persona into her music and crafting creative pop songs since last year's Poppy.Computer.

While it's not as cohesive as Poppy.Computer, Am I a Girl? definitely isn't stale, and it succeeds at expanding Poppy's sound and identity enough to keep fans listening and guessing.

Am I a Girl? is an enjoyable enough club record, but it fails to add anything new to the conversation.

Poppy's Am I A Girl? is... a mess of an album to say the least. This album's sound is all over the place, with some songs being exclusively pop, some songs being very heavily rock and metal influenced, and other songs having a mix of all of these genres. This record is quite the handful but enough of it ties up to the Poppy lore and her character as a whole, especially the Interludes, I found those to be intriguing (especially Interlude 2 which sounds like Fitter Happier).

I didn't like this as much as I would have wanted to. I like Poppy for the most part and I think she has a lot of potential but this record is rather messy and just has some weaker moments.

Best Track: In a Minute
Worst Track: Interlude 2
