The Skinny

In many ways, this understated, stripped return to the fray is long overdue – and it's no surprise to find her seeking out collaborators with a vital underground pedigree

It’s rare that you get an album by an established artist that genuinely shocks and irrevocably repositions them. Blank Project is one of those albums. This is a hugely significant return.

A.V. Club

Neneh Cherry has been making music for 25 years now, but Blank Project proves that she’s absolutely free of any signs of creative stagnation.

90
The Line of Best Fit

Produced by Kieran Hebden, performed by synth and drum duo RocketNumberNine and recorded in a five day burst of creativity, Blank Project is a rough and ready, powerful, flawed, intense and ultimately wonderful record.

90
AllMusic

From front to back, Blank Project is riveting uneasy listening.

80
DIY

The glue between ten ambitious tracks, she holds her own and sounds more relevant than ever.

80
The 405

There are too many stand out moments to take in in just one listen. It's easy to just describe this album as minimalist, but there is a great depth in the lyrics as well as in the way the music has been constructed.

80
NME

Fearless iconoclasm was always Cherry's stock in trade, and it's the fuel that powers an excellent new record that blends fizzing electronica with an organic, rootsy authenticity.

80
PopMatters

There is no decline, no irrelevance. Blank Project is Cherry’s finest album, and proves she is an artist still on an upward trajectory.

80
Spin

It's a major work, one that confirms that she's only marginal in the sense that she's vibrating on her own wavelength, way out at the edge of the spectrum.

77
Pitchfork

It’s a rare pleasure to see a musician who was under-appreciated during her heyday have a delayed influence a later generation of artists while she’s still in good working condition. It’s even rarer, and even more pleasurable, to see her staying a few lengthy strides ahead of the game.

75
Under The Radar

For the most part Blank Project shares the same timeless quality as her best work and sees a mature and engaging return for one of pop's true originals.

75
Consequence of Sound

Blank Project is still spoken from a feminist mindset. She isn’t trying to incite chants with her populist hooks or fist pumps out of excited empowerment. Things aren’t so accessible on Blank Project, an effort that aims to discomfort you through its raw emotions.

Exclaim!

After 17 odd years of making solo albums, Neneh Cherry surfaces with the force of a jab rather than an uppercut. We appreciate the contact regardless.

'New York City' as an album.

This album really has a nice groove. Probably my favorite thing Kieran Hebdan has produced in years. That fuzzy low end puts me in a really good place.

I wanted to really love this album, but some tracks just seemed to be too long or really uninteresting. Nonetheless, it is a decent album by a respected artist.

It took her 18 years!
Stripped down to the core of the senses and as mental as you would expect!
A genuine experience!
