Completed in 2017 and shelved for almost a year, Pinegrove’s third record is smaller, softer, and closer to the chest.

Though marred in controversy, this is easily the groups most gorgeous set of songs from a musical standpoint. Not to say it's necessarily their best but the music here is more mature, melodic and clean, sounding ironically like a band at the peak of its powers. if this is alt-country so be it
Pinegrove follows their breakout record with something subdued, focussed, and altogether beautiful. While headman Evan Stephens Hall's songwriting and performance retains its subtlety and strength, the musical lines drawn through the record are more masterfully laid than the group's previous works. With the ebb and flow of slight-of-hand transitions interspersed between more anthemic alt-country tracks, Skylight goes down very well in full.
Warm and encompassing, I actually prefer this record to 'Cardinal.' This record feels more cohesive and more focused than their debut, and I prefer the overall aesthetic here. This record is great at any time, but I think it works as an excellent morning/afternoon record for a cold day.

There aren't necessarily and mega-hits here like 'Old Friends,' but I think tracks like 'Intrepid,' 'Patterson & Leo' and 'Darkness' rank among some of the bands best work. It's interesting to see that the ... read more
