The 405

Like a book where you can choose your own ending or a sandbox video game, the true beauty of Along The Way and the rest of McGuire's output is that it is so free from the shackles of any genre or scene and so 'out there' that it is completely open to each listener's interpretation.

The Line of Best Fit

While the new album regularly drapes itself in the nostalgia that defined his debut (jovial recordings of family and friends are prominent on both), it seems to have a wider range in which to roam.

In many respects, the intent behind Along The Way is admirable indeed. Many plus points, then; even if just some variation wouldn’t have gone amiss.

There is no question about Mark McGuire’s prodigious skills as both a composer and a performer, but bringing a track to a good shuddering climax now and again never hurt anybody. Along the Way is always pretty, but rarely beautiful.
