Waaay too damn long (even as admitted by Spencer Krug himself). However, the latest release from the Wolf Parade frontman is a unique and interesting listen. This is the most experimental use of his voice yet. The two albums interspersed-into-one make for a vastly different listening experience, track-by-track. It sort of works though. I enjoyed it most by skipping to the next track as I pleased, since not only is the album long, but a lot of songs seem to drag on.
Come on, Spencer. As one of the 17 Moonface fans, even I think this is just too much. Seems there is an interesting concept here involving mythology, but who has the time and desire to break it down? Something about a Minotaur that people keep screwing over? The instrumentation is lovely as ever from him, and there is a lot of vocal experimentation. It just all starts running together after the first thirty minutes or so. This is one of the least casual listens I've heard all year.
The most ambitious release of 2018? This album is positively monolithic - combining giant song structures, complex rippling patterns of drums and keys, Destroyer ‘Kaputt’ style sax embellishments and all manner of vocal effects.
