“Mayonnaise” is by no means bad, but it’s the sound of Deer Tick spinning their wheels. John McCauley presumably has an endless stash of competent, moderately enjoyable bluesy folk-rock songs, but he used to strive for more than that. “War Elephant” holds up as a well-written indie folk debut, and even his 2017 double album was more compelling. “Mayonnaise” is sadly devoid of any exciting or memorable lyrics or melodies.
