after two of the best prog-rock albums ever made, it's understandable that The Mars Volta would wanna change up their sound a little. while Frances the Mute & Deloused definitely have their differences in sound, they still share many of the same qualities which make them both so good. so on Amputechture, The Mars Volta decide to scale back their sound a little and make a more accessible, varied, and dynamic album. did it pay off?

ehhhh for the most part yeah.

this is still definitely a ... read more

Amputechture is a bit weirder that their previous couple of albums but still manages to have moments of chaos will focusing more on the atmosphere ant it works wonderfully.

It's not as good as Frances and Deloused (mainly because of its lack of a primary vision) but it still has some of my favorite TMV tracks to date. Day of the Baphomets is probably in my top 10 out of their entire discography, I love how they play around with really wacky vocal effects and minute long percussion breaks that flow seamlessly into Cedric threatening the listener while his voice pans back and forth.
