after two of the best prog-rock albums ever made, it's understandable that The Mars Volta would wanna change up their sound a little. while Frances the Mute & Deloused definitely have their differences in sound, they still share many of the same qualities which make them both so good. so on Amputechture, The Mars Volta decide to scale back their sound a little and make a more accessible, varied, and dynamic album. did it pay off?

The Mars Volta return just a year after their magnum opus Frances The Mute with their 3rd studio album, Amputechture, and while it isn't as mind-blowing or surprising as Frances The Mute, it still succeeds at being a great Mars Volta album, and a great album in general.

Their experimentation is still present on Amputechture, and while not AS frequent as their last album it still shows up all over the album. It's filled with a lot of unique instrumentation, strange vocal effects (especially in ... read more
Lol I love that album cover. Amazing album, the last REALLY good album by The Mars Volta. I miss their music. “Day of the Baphomets” is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard
In case you doubted if these guys were masters of their craft, let Amputechture serve as a reminder that The Mars Volta are an enigmatic force sent to Earth to bring chaos to the plebeian masses.

Vicarious Atonement is such an effective and classic introduction to the album, with a slow building, minimalistic guitar track with some killer solo parts.
