The Guardian

The "songs" sound as though they are competing to unleash as many prog-rock cliches as possible: portentous guitar riffs and twiddly bits are interspersed with all manner of atonal wind instruments and sonic pomposities. It's difficult to pick out a storyline among lyrical guff about "toltec bones" and antlers, and it's even harder to believe such twaddle is being made in 2008

There are at least a few solid tracks on this album, but trying to binge it is a pain for me because of how many tracks there are with a similar sound. Cedric has a strong delivery on this track as usual. It just doesn't have the same hook as their prior and latter albums.

Even though this is far from being Volta's best effort, it is undeniable that with Bedlam in Goliath, the band brings some of the aggression and high-voltage funk/progressive/post-hardcore aesthetic they got known for during the early 2000s. The songs presented here are obviously not even close to the rich virtuoso psychedelia showed in their first two records, while those were carefully forged paranoid manifestos and showed Mars Volta in their prime, but in Goliath, some moments really stand ... read more
