Another great album by Slayer. South Of Heaven shows the band going in a different direction after the success of Reign In Blood, and personally I like it.
A few complaints I have is that I do think that a few tracks didn't really need to be here. Songs like Live Undead and Behind The Crooked Cross felt like nothing more than just filler to me.
Also, whilst I still absolutely adore the instrumentals, I do think the vocals are fairly uninteresting here, and honestly I think they are at their ... read more

I like this new direction the band took after "Reign in Blood". The music feels way more focused and not just some thrasher dudes trying to play as fast as possible while praising Satan. However, it still suffers from some indistinguishable songs, but a decent record, regardless.

EDIT: Wow, turns out this is actually pretty great! Although a fairly slower album when compared to the previous record, "South of Heaven" rarely gets boring and it's far more riff driven than ... read more

The title track is better than most of the album. Most of the songs lie around ok and meh-tier, except for Mandatory Suicide, Dissident Aggressor and Spill the Blood. Slayer took a step in a direction away form the critically acclaimed Reign in Blood, which was probably a smart move.

South of Heaven was my first favorite album. The first one I ever listened to while thinking “god damn, this is music for me.” I had never heard sincerely dark or heavy music before that, and I never looked back.

It all started with my first videogame, DOOM. I played that game when I was just 2 years old – I worked the gun while my father did everything else, but it was still an incredibly memorable experience that was burned into my memory. I didn’t play the game for a ... read more

I like the new direction, I think it was definitely needed around the 4th or 5th album, and after the explosive Reign in Blood but with this new direction the band kinda of suffers, simply because it just not as interesting, especially the vocals. Don't get me wrong it is still a good record and I enjoyed it but after Reign in Blood it can of feels a bit underwhelming at points . Also, WTF rolling Stone 20/100. You guys are on some serious drugs.

Ah, yes. Slayer’s South of Heaven, the more melody-oriented version of its older brother, Reign in Blood. When I came back to this album for the first time in a good couple of months, I was really hoping to enjoy it as I previously had, and I did. However, after what seemed like only a couple of listens I found the album quickly growing off of me. I came to a realization that, while there were some great tracks on this album, South of Heaven was mostly what seemed like just a bunch of ... read more
