The story behind Extraordinary Machine is a tantilizing one that helps to clarify some of what you're hearing across the record. From the initial recording to the label not seeing any definitive singles, Apple re-recording many of the tracks and the leak of the original album, and finally the finished album being released after laborous years. There was clearly a long road to come to what can be heard on Fiona Apple's third release, and it's worth digging into some of the story if you're ... read more

Fiona Apple binge part 3
Once again, Fiona Apple, makes an incredible batch of songs. However, I think this is her weakest project because the production is kind of bland and it doesn’t do anything new with her sound. Learning about the album’s history gains perspective. In case you don’t know, before making Extraordinary Machine, Fiona considered retiring from music, but then decided to make her third album. With a new Apple album coming in 10 days, after an 8 year gap, i figured a review would be appropriate. In particular i've decided to review what is obviously considered her weakest project, user score of 81 while the other 3 records are at 86 or 87, having said that, if the weakest album you make is 80+ you're clearly a talented artist.
Extraordinary Machine was initially shelved by Apple's label Epic Records in May 2003, for lack of a single that they felt they could promote the album with, ... read more
