God Is in the TV

By throwing everything into its creation, reflecting on the distance travelled, they have produced some of their finest songs to date. And, it feels like there’s maybe more to come, just around the corner.

80
AllMusic

With a handful of impressive releases already under their belt, Tiny Ruins have outdone themselves here, with a full set of compellingly crafted songs that are enriched rather than overwhelmed by the fuller sound.

80
Loud and Quiet

Couched in ephemeral imagery, the untouchable but deeply felt is explored throughout on an album that will warm you on even the coldest of days.

There’s so much room for everything to breath and flourish. Olympic Girls takes it slow, and we’re given the perfect chance for reflection through the mid-tempo bliss.

Paste

Olympic Girls is warm, bold and anthemic. It’s sonically rooted in whimsy, but it supports some heavy ideas, an enchanting contrast of content and sound.

Exclaim!

Olympic Girls is an experiment in boundaries, arms outstretched, wondering if there is other life.

Northern Transmissions

Tiny Ruins’ new record, Olympic Girls will likely pull you into its warm dreaminess with either its lyrics or its instrumentation, both of which are compelling.

DIY

‘Olympic Girls’ is Tiny Ruins diversifying their sound and, in the process, unlocking something new and palpable. Simply by moving further out, they start to let us in.

The Skinny

Beginning with minimal instrumentals, Tiny Ruins builds layer upon layer of sound and, like an impressionist painting onto a blank canvas, every word is an incredibly visual brushstroke that illuminates each scene. Each note is flawless and precise – no moment is wasted.

this is top-level songwriting but requires patience and multiple listens to grasp it all. it reveals more depth over time as the arrangements are meticulous and subtle (as others have noted). Tiny Ruins is short-listed for the 2019 Silver Scroll Award that goes to the top New Zealand songwriter for the year, going head-to-head with Aldous Harding. the winner will be truly deserving no matter who gets the award.

It is so emotional and cute, achieved harmonic fusion, totally recommended

Kiwi singer-songwriter/folk stuff lifted up by some imaginative arrangements.

A bunch of good songs on this thing, easy listen start to finish.
