It’s not an easy listen and will send hipsters scurrying for their bobble hats and fake specs, but this is the sound of a band pushing themselves, challenging their audience and making something to be proud of.

The Line of Best Fit

It’s this capacity such wide-ranging diversity that keeps the record so remarkably compelling – Dead is an album built on a relentless barrage of sounds, ideas, and experiments. Whatever you think of the album itself, it’s certainly never boring.

80
DIY

The rhythms are primitive and murk-encrusted, but the lyricism is astute and pungent. Alarmingly immediate, 'Dead' revels in its own foreboding muck.

The Skinny

Dead continues the bass heavy, free-form direction that the Edinburgh trio explored on well-received EPs Tape One and Tape Two. No two songs sound the same; this is an album full of playful inventiveness.

The 405

As jagged and dark as Dead might appear, there's a real celebratory feel to this album and that's down to some fantastic influences.

Tiny Mix Tapes

As good as Hastings’ production is, however, it is Young Fathers’ vocals that make DEAD great.

NME

Somehow they’ve retained their pop nous, making for an album that’s unique, but maddeningly all over the place.

Solid project with interesting genre blending. Young Fathers are ones to watch as they release more commercial music (I’m writing this in 2018 among the release of “Cocoa Sugar”). They’re an entertaining trio who utilize everything in their expiremental arsenal. At times the expirementation draws more attention to itself rather than the album. It doesn’t hurt that the adaption to mood shifts mid-expirementation are pretty consistent, although it makes for a ... read more

a nice listen from young fathers. it apparently got huge acclaim in great britain, but i dont think it was all too great. it was boring at times, and i got a little tired of the afro beats. however, the pure emotion in these tracks is insane, and the production is very well done as well.
fav tracks: low, war
