Darlings is a record that feels simultaneously cerebral and carnal – and things don’t get much sexier than that.

80
AllMusic

The sprawling pop experimentalism that was the bedrock of his former project has been subdued and refined to fit Drew's more singular vision and sharpened songwriting.

75
Consequence of Sound

While it lacks the raw, jubilant catharsis of a Broken Social Scene release, Darlings is both understated and refined, showcasing the many facets of Drew’s romantic songwriting.

70
The Line of Best Fit

For a man who’s spent so much of his career surrounded by a veritable who’s who of Canadian indie rock, the nuance and confidence that he brings to his solo work is startling.

70
Exclaim!

He's no longer trying to prove things with a bang; he wants to pull you in and convey his messages with a bone-chilling whisper.

60
The Skinny

This is Drew at his most meditative; no bad thing, since beneath the driving rhythms and walls of echoing guitar, he possesses a songwriting ability sometimes drowned out on BSS releases.

60
PopMatters

The best parts of Darlings make you work, as Drew does, to peel back the surface and dig into what’s there but some of it just leaves us with quiet, impenetrably sweet sounds that repetition can’t quite crack through.

60
NME

Equal parts lo-fi sketch-like song structure and buffed-to-a-shine ’80s soft rock, these 12 songs are evidently personal and, at times, thematically obscure

Not as cool as intented and not as effective as expected.
Just basic.

enjoyable, not exceptional. Good Sex is a killer track and First in Line is a standout

Solid album from Drew. Love the vocals. The LP has its unique atmosphere going for it. Some of the tracks on here are not very memorable which is a downside.

Stand out tracks for me are Good Sex (one of the tracks of the year), First in Line and And That's All I Know.
