CRITIC REVIEWS

Clash

On his self-titled debut LP, the Ladbroke Grove wordsmith is at the peak of his powers.

90
Tiny Mix Tapes

Many tracks on AJ Tracey represent a sharp turn away from the climate of stony-faced realism and road-weary catharsis that has come to define British rap.

85
The Line of Best Fit

It’s hard to think of a debut so confident in every musical aspect since J Hus’ Common Sense. Advice: consume daily for effective mood enhancement.

80
The Guardian

What his debut album is really good at is hitting a mainstream sweet spot, coming up with music that functions as pop but feels natural and unforced.

80
The Independent

The variety and scale of ambition on this album is breathtaking. Fans will be surprised to discover Tracey sings almost as much as he raps, in pleasingly gruff tones.

80
NME

As a document of British rap’s indefinable present ... AJ Tracey’s debut is perhaps the best of the current crop; twisted, vibrant and ever-shifting, but linked with that confident voice.

70
Crack Magazine

It’s not versatility that makes this record such an emphatic one, it’s AJ’s clinical ear for melodies, samples and hooks, and the components of a song that make you want to return to it.

68
Pitchfork

The debut from grime’s rising star is a mixed bag but still peppered with hits, inviting elements of dancehall, pop, trap, and garage to the same house party.

60
The Observer

Tracey’s bouncy, sharp flow deserves better than poolside cliches, though. With the exception of Doing It, little here is straight-up grime.

40
Loud and Quiet

It’s too odd and yet too boring, too confused yet somehow dead behind the eyes.

Asides the tracks that rip off Travis Scott, this is a pretty good album. He has some nice flows and rhyme schemes on this. Tracks 11 to 14 are excellent.

AJ's highs on this project are arguably him at his best ever, but collectively this album fails to be entertaining both lyrically and instrumentally. This the type of album for girls who drive a Corsa and have Strongbow DarkFruits as their drink of choice at a festival. Bland.
Fav Tracks: Wifey Riddim 3, Ladbroke Grove, Doing It
Worst Track: Butterflies
