The Guardian

There simply isn’t a weak or even middling track, and the strongest can go toe to toe with the best of Al Green or Bobby Womack.

PopMatters

American Love Call takes Durand Jones and the Indications to new heights of musicianship, and it turns out that they are, indeed, much stronger the more they work together.

American Songwriter

Some selections recycle musical and lyrical clichés from the golden age of soul they are emulating. But the album is so beautifully performed and meticulously crafted.

NME

The Indiana five-piece have created a timeless, optimistic listen – a great American soul record for these times, an homage to giants such as Sam Cooke and Al Green.

AllMusic

American Love Call is an outstanding example of how craft and passion can walk hand in hand, and puts Durand Jones & the Indications near the top of the heap in the retro-soul sweepstakes.

Pitchfork

Jones and crew trade their infectious bounce for punch-drunk sway, leaning fully into orchestral soul.

I dig this recycled soul sound, but this just feels like you're listening to the same song over and over again. However, the song that is always repeating is good, so I'm kinda mixed.

Gourgeous and lavish soul. Some of the best I’ve heard in a while. Beautiful production that complements the emotional singing. Good range of song topics and styles. The horns and pianos are especially chilling, but the album still has a warm, summery vibe.

Favorites: Morning in America, Don’t You Know, Circles, Court of Love, Long Way Home, Walk Away, Listen to Your Heart, Sea Gets Hotter, How Can I Be Sure

Worst: Too Mamy Tears

As far as contemporary soul recordings go, this is a very laidback and cohesive collection of tracks whose heartfelt musicianship shines through.
