This was probably one of Madonna's better albums. It has some good songwriting and some amazing production. At some times it can sound like some of her newer albums but, she decided to stick with the sound that suits her the best. This album talks about some very personal stuff and, I feel like that's the only reason why I liked this album. Similar to how I like High as Hope so much, it's just very personal. Maybe the most interesting part of American Life is how its failure indexes a more significant failure in pop music in the immediate years following 9/11. The catastrophic events that happened between Music and this album caused global panic and a new social responsibility to produce art with meaning. Pop as a genre often struggles with serious subject-matter, and American Life feels particular weighted by its charged politics. Madonna shows a side of herself that honestly I had no idea she had, and i fucking LOVE IT, sincerely I think this is one of her BEST albums since her debut, the production is flawless, the lyrics are acid but fun, the vocals remind me of how much of an iconic artist she is... If only she could bring something like this in 2019 though
Her most underrated and misunderstood record. This was the first time I experienced a rawness to her musical output and for that I am thankful American Life sits in her catalog.
