The Line of Best Fit
Re-emerging from a five-year hiatus, the Brooklynites fizz with undimmed hallucinogenic effervescence on a third album that could credibly pass as some warped relic issuing from a future civilisation.

Exclaim!

Their third full-length, Scholars, reflects the modernization their latest instruments have undergone ... keeping their wholly distinct sound while embracing digital and synth-based instrumentation.

Sputnikmusic

As Buke and Gase ebb and flow from one creative whim to the next, Scholars marks one of the oddest and most intriguing albums of the early year.

Pitchfork

With an eye toward the innovations of contemporaries working in similar modes, Scholars exists on its own proud terms—suggesting the authority of a peer-reviewed entry to the canon.

God Is in the TV
It makes for a frustrating listen, the two sides never quite reaching the heights that are hinted at.

AllMusic

There are moments on Scholars where Buke and Gase are clearly still finding their feet in their new electronic landscapes, but the album is an ambitious and adventurous set of music that's every bit as engaged as anything they've ever released, and there's an undertow of discovery that makes their new music an adventure worth a spin or two.

The Skinny
While there are certainly some decent enough ideas to be enjoyed here, this is ultimately a rather flat listen that doesn't challenge anywhere near enough as it appears to intend to; a real wasted opportunity.

the vocals throughout this album were unique and produced well while the actual production of the music was very unnecessarily wonky and powerful for what the vocals were trying to display

While not quite as sticky and consistent as their previous effort, there's more than enough sonic experimentation to keep me coming back, over and over.
