The Line of Best Fit

Both the stark realism of the romance-averse blue-collar settings and potent musical left-turns make The Imperial sound thoroughly authentic, as opposed to a trip through someone else's back pages.


Boone’s soulful presence in The Delines brings a different slant to Vlautin’s characters, her voice transmitting something more hopeful and tender.

A familiar formula, but just as welcoming as ever. A subtle, quiet record packed with typical Americana/country rock staples that embraces you like a tight, warm hug. But packed under the relaxing subtly of the instrumentation is Willy Vautin's dark, tragic and even semi romantic lyrics delivered perfectly by Doone's dreary yet deeply alluring voice. As long as a song can move me to tears it´s all right with me. Imperial is still on a high level in every musical aspect and contains stellar songwriting. No musical revolution at all taking place - but sometimes it´s just great to feel at home with a friend and a beer.
"Let´s be us again" and the title track recommended as a starter
Criminally overlooked recording. Not only an insightful look at Mid-American angst, but the productions, with subtleties of horns and Austin twang, underscore heartache of modern will. Let's Be Us Again, He Don't Burn for Me, and a breathtaking The Imperial stand out. If you don't listen, you're missing something special.
Beautiful... yet kind of boring after 20 minutes
