Though it occasionally suffers from overambition, the jazzy I Also Want to Die in New Orleans is another helping of admirable personal and social commentary from Mark Kozelek.
This is Mark's misunderstood masterpiece. This is my heaviest, most unapologetic, guilty (no) pleasure. I don't know what it is, but this record's oblong song structures, scattered and unfocused topics, loose, jazzy instrumentation, Mark's podcast-core vocal performances, and this obtusely scant tracklist just leave me in absolute love with it. I literally dont understand this album at all??
The tales he tells are so specific but I am so affected by them and I relate to quite a few of them.
Why is it almost named after a suicideboyz album?? why is there a cat on the cover like that like walking and shit?? why are the songs so so long?? Why does it work??????? Why does this guy rambling for like 15 minutes at a time work so well??? why do I like this so much????
