If you told me, March 1, that I'll prefer an UK-rap album over Solange's new project...I would've laughed...HARD...

Now I'm here giving this a score which implies that my disappointment with the empty "When I Get Home" got cured...

Will definitely be one of the best rap albums this year...

Goddammit Little Simz is just too capable of a rapper for this world! Her flows and delivery are potent as hell and her lyrics are sharp and intriguing! But this wouldn't be a terrific hip hop record if she wasn't so on point with the outstanding production too, which forgoes modern rap cliches in favor of great live instrumentation. Overall, this is one of the most forward-thinking rap records of the year!

I'm late but holy shit

Let me elaborate: The sound of this album is something that I really wanted to hear more of in hip hop. It's energetic in a swaggering but humble way, with just enough organic feels to not lose its slick experimental qualities. Despite only being 35 minutes, this album compacts so much great ideas and sounds.

As a longtime hater of UK Rap music, I find this album to be very good. Fuck The Streets, Young Fathers and MIA this is what the UK hip-hop music scene should be.

Didn't know i'd love a project where one of the tracks ends with someone telling me the album is "Sweet as a fucking nut".

Hoooooly shit. This shit really deserves the hype here people. This thing came out of no-where for me and completely punched me in the teeth. Little Simz is one of the most charismatic and 'no fucks giving' rapper I've heard in a while, with absolute fantastic verses through-out and absolutely ruthless with it's topics. It's a fun, lively, in your face album, ... read more

Yeah, this is gonna be my TA13OO of 2019, I already know.
(Not in the sense that they sound alike, just in the sense that it's just a really goddamn excellent hip hop album.)
Honestly, it's albums like these that make me happy I stopped having a prejudice against hip hop in the first place.

Little Simz most finnest work yet.
In this record, she pushes her characteristic flow and rapping style to the limit, bringing some of the best, most energetic, agressive and catchy tracks that she ever pulled out ("Boss" is a very good example)
Music-wise, this album is a great evolution from "Stilness In Wonderland", and probably the best rap album of the year yet.

At the age of 25, Simbi Akijawo aka Little Simz, has finally succeeded with the release of her third album, "GREY Area". Ten uppercut-shaped tracks with machine-gun flow and rumbling bass. These tracks are ALL exceptional. More direct and incisive than its previous albums, "GREY Area" combines modernity groove and tradition soul, which gives a hip hop which sees jazz influences vibrate on rhythmic jerks on which the words are of all splendors. The only problem is the length ... read more

It took until 101 FM for me to hear a song I really enjoyed. This seems to be one of those albums where I see why its popular, but its not something I'll ever listen to. And yes, its because shes British.

Grew on me a little bit. I can't say I'm head over heels in love with GREY Area, but it's probably the tightest rap album of 2019 so far. The production is hard-hitting yet smooth, the hooks almost always land (particularly on Selfish), and Simz herself is always on point. I don't know how this will hold up once the year kicks into high gear (hopefully soon), as I can see it either growing on me even more or souring, but for now it's definitely an early highlight.

I don't know why, but it took me a few months to finally listen to this abum. Holy fuck.. It was a terrible mistake. Now I'm finishing it for the third time and I really have to admit that it's one of the best hip-hop albums I've ever listened to. I love the atmosphere of this album so much, the beats are incredibly well done and her rapping style is just great. I also love her British accent which I already liked this year in case of Dave album. Every song here is at the same high level and I ... read more

Redux Review: I be honest as i never heard anything previous by this artist, until this came up my radar. I'm not a huge fan of grime as you can already tell by my reviews/rating, however at times i can stumble across gems that go above and beyond my expectations. This is one of those albums that exceeded my expectations. Grey area is a collage of authentic groovy instruments and diverse sounds across here. Little ... read more

This is a perfect example of an album that does not necessarily fit my taste, but is seemingly objectively good. The production on this album is very good, and is mainly focused around traditional, yet unique hip hop beats with noticeable backing voice tracks layered behind drums; and an array of other instruments on later tracks of the album. There is not a single beat on this album that I don't like; and both the writing and overall composition of the album are fantastic. However, Little Simz ... read more

What a pleasant surprise!
I saw little in the name and looked at the album art and I thought "oh well time for generic trap album" but ...
This ended up being a very tasty record. The live instrumentation, along with the great production, managed to make this a very good listening experience.
The rapping seems authentic and the delivery is very energetic. If I listened to the lyrics I bet I wouldn't hate them.

Great

Original Score: 79, Good

Edit: I did not give thing the credit it deserves the first time I listened. Truly a staple for modern uk hip-hop, as its progressive undertones and interesting beats enrich the listener immensely. GAT DAMN.

Original review: I hadn't heard of this artist before, so I was really excited to get into this record. I was NOT disappointed. Since having never listened to UK Rap at all, I loved hearing her accent on this thing. The lyrics are self-reflective and ... read more

I SAID IT WITH MY CHEST AND I DON'T CARE WHO I OFFEND, UH HUH, HAAAA

Five months into the new year (ok the year is not so new) and not a lot of albums have been really catching my attention. There have been some good ones that I have listened to but the repeat listens have been rare. To be fair, I have also been catching up on a backlog of albums that I'll never be caught up on but that's a personal problem.

After listening to this album and really digesting it, I have come to one conclusion: ... read more

So addictive. Production and perfomances are marvelous. A wonderful LP, crafted with passion and honesty. It develops Little Simz character in a compelling and fascinating way, where I just want to replay the record once it finishes. “Offence” and “Boss” are total bangers, what a way to start an album.

"Some people read The Alchemist and still never amount to shit." -- High school me would have lost my goddamn mind from this statement.

This is so much fun!! Little Simz raps at a dizzying speed, but you don't miss a single word. She depicts being twenty as a muddied mess of feels. I love how she describes her own experiences in very detailed narratives. Beyond her incredible presentation, there are a lot of different fun beats that keep the album chugging forward. Simz proves she is one of the best MC's right now. This album is dark and up front but still so easy on the ears, it's the kind of album you can just have on repeat and it won't get old. The flow from track to track is so damn smooth and each song compliments the next. a brilliant rap album.

If Little Simz hasn't exhibited her unrelenting expertise to spit enough, this record certainly doesn't back on that quality one bit.

Sure, Simz' dexterous flows & bullet-proof confidence are the record's main course, but the overall production & Simz' lyrical tone tastes rather mature this time around. The beats' textures come ranging from dubby undertones & live instrumentation while a sentimental side comes untangling as the album goes on. Ultimately focused & sharp, most ... read more

Not especially innovative, but DAMN if this isn't a solid project. Simz's flow is impeccable and her lyrics are smart and incisive. This is a real pleasure to listen to. Will be in my top 10 (probably top 5) of the year for sure.

A stunning display of talent and an example of perfect execution, there is not one weak moment on this album. It is almost as if she is just telling stories that just happen to rhyme at points, the words and phrasing she uses are just that natural. Definitely an early contender for aoty.

There is no blueprint in how to create a modern musical success today. You could argue that there may have been traceable formulas in the past, but what makes our postmodern age so fascinating today is that there is no need for the musician to tie themselves down to a contextual starting point. Many fail due to that lack of obvious infrastructure; indeed, our postmodern age has its negatives. But occasionally, someone comes along to remind us that this era of music still has its gems, and ... read more

Little Simz’ new album is great through and through. Whether she is going for a more hard hitting sound or being more smooth and introspective, she kills every beat she is on here. Starting the album with the mantra of “I said it with my chest and I don’t care who I offend” is a hell of a statement and Simz lives up to it. Her flow is extremely dynamic, weaving its way through the instrumentals seamlessly. On tracks like “Offence”, “Boss”, and ... read more

While GREY Area certainly displays Little Simz' capability, the album as a whole is unexciting, and even feels a little contrived.

The album starts strong with 3 killer tracks with slick production and killer flows. On these tracks, Little Simz brings a special and unique flavor of hip-hop that's very gritty and feels pretty DIY. Selfish is soft and smooth, but still comes off as earnest and sincere. As soon as we come to the track Wounds, the album does a nosedive. Wounds' guitar track gets ... read more

And with that, we have the first contender for best rap album of the year.

Little Simz is oozing with confidence and swagger across this record, with a ton of personality being displayed across this record. Simz has an incredible flow and scheme to her raps, and the production across this record hits so well with the rhymes. Honestly, Simz feels like a London-based Lauryn Hill in many ways on this record. There are both neo-soul and funk elements splattered across this, even though other ... read more
