What I appreciate in the dusty songbook of Nick Waterhouse is the fact that I can enjoy a small bite of the past, offered by a young man and not by some-should-have-been-retired old rockers.
Constantly catchy and energetic 50s-style rhythm and blues record from an artist I've been following for quite awhile now. This one hits the home-run for its consistency and cohesion in terms of flow and composition, which is undemanding yet inspired by the era it sounds like. A suiting record for doing the chores and pretending to be a soul singer from the 50s, which is a lot of fun.
Nick Waterhouse creates an album that would be perfect for another decade. Unfortunately, it's the present and this album does not have the luxury of our nostalgia. He does a competent job of attracting our ears and our appreciation without addressing our need for freshness enough to stand out.
Best Track: I Feel an Urge Coming On
Listen If You Think You'd Like: to go to the sock hop
Full disclosure: I heard this in a restaurant, Shazam’d it, listened to one track and went back and consumed the album. Had never heard of him before last week. This album’s a gem. Get into it.
