God Is in the TV

Encore, the third album by The Specials holds up well against their previous releases. REALLY well, in fact. It didn’t make my heart sink; it made my heart SING.

We need right-thinking rebel records like ‘Encore’ now more than ever.
Retaining the pop immediacy that has always made them so striking The Specials are able to root this in contemporary issues, challenging themselves and the culture around them at every turn.
Rolling Stone
The cover is the best sort of revival: old meeting new on equal footing, using the past as a springboard to an improved, remixed future.
Musically, The Specials sound is more The Coup than the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. It’s danceable, sure, but there’s a sinister edge, and the album spans more than just your classic ska and reggae beats. It’s easy to listen to, easy to get lost in. Music to fight the power by.

Despite this lack of fire, Encore is a definite step up from the covers albums the Specials made surrounding Y2K: they feel like a band with a purpose, even if they're not making an especially big deal about it.

The Guardian
It’s an unequivocal triumph on an album that mixes the great and the so-so, the former outweighing the latter enough to appease fans, if not, one suspects, ex-bandmates.
So boring.
Trying to moderate my enthusiasm, I adopted a cool attitude, I acknowledged the waste of time and I was ready for a kick in the ass.
But as the album kept on playing and without realizing it, I had stood up and I had started dancing to the vibrant energy of a familiar manifesto.
Though there are not that many fast-paced "two tone" tracks on this record, The Specials still prove that they can hold their own with thoughtful commentary on social issues of today.
Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys 8.5/10
B.L.M. 8/10
Vote For Me 8.5/10
The Lunatics 8/10
Breaking Point 8.5/10
Blam Blam Fever 8.5/10
10 Commandments 8/10
Embarrassed By You 8/10
The Life And Times (Of A Man Called Depression) 8/10
We Sell Hope 8/10
Average: 8.2/10
Melodias divertidinhas mas as letras são extremamente "cruas" poeticamente, falta uma certa sutileza...
